Accessibility

What's accessible now and what's coming

At Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary, the visitor center, nature center, barn, nature classroom, restrooms and picnic areas are accessible, but the trails themselves are natural paths and boardwalks, not a universally accessible trail. Mass Audubon is designing an All Persons Trail it plans to open in late 2027 or 2028. Until then, the visitor center lends a sturdy rollator, powered mobility devices can get a day pass, and caregivers get in free.

Buildings and Facilities

Mass Audubon lists these as accessible at Ipswich River: the visitor center, restrooms, nature center, barn, nature classroom and picnic areas. Mass Audubon says all of its nature centers have been renovated with ADA-compliant parking, entrances, restrooms, admissions areas, activity spaces and exhibits.

Parking and Walkways

The parking area and entry walkways are a mix of gravel, stone dust, paved asphalt and wooden ramp, according to Mass Audubon. The planned All Persons Trail will connect with designated accessible parking.

The Trails Today

The current trails are natural surfaces: old carriage roads, woodland paths and wooden boardwalks over wetlands. Mass Audubon describes the Drumlin Trail as a wide, easy carriage road, while the South Esker Trail is a narrow raised ridge with many rocks — one to avoid if footing is a concern. Visitor center staff can point you to a route that suits you. See the trail map.

Rollator and Mobility Devices

A sturdy rollator is available any time the visitor center is open. Ask inside, or reserve it ahead by emailing the sanctuary. Mass Audubon also issues day passes for powered mobility devices on its foot-travel-only trails; its procedures for other power-driven mobility devices are linked from its admission and access page.

Caregivers and Service Animals

Mass Audubon admits one-on-one aides and caregivers supporting a person with a disability free. Service animals are welcome, even though pets are not; Mass Audubon publishes a service animal statement.

Sensory-Friendly Hours

Four Saturdays a year, from 8:00 to 10:00 am, the sanctuary holds sensory-friendly hours: fewer visitors, no noisy stewardship work, and an indoor space open for self-guided sensory-friendly activities. Staff can suggest a trail based on noise, sun or shade, distance and grade. Mass Audubon's tentative dates are November 14, 2026, February 13, 2027 and May 8, 2027 (the July 18, 2026 session has passed).

Paddling and Camping

The canoe landing is a 0.4-mile walk from the visitor center down the Bunker Meadows and Ipswich River Trails, and canoes weigh 70 to 80 pounds, needing two adults to carry. Perkins Island has no running water, electricity or restrooms. Call ahead to talk through what's possible; see rentals and camping.
