Play area, grotto, programs and camp

Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary is an easy nature outing with kids: short trails from the parking lot, boardwalks over beaver wetlands, a 1905 stone grotto kids can climb through, and a Nature Play Area by the visitor center. Children 2 to 12 pay $4. Mass Audubon also runs weekly toddler programs, school-vacation programs and a summer nature camp for ages 5 to 14.

The Nature Play Area

Just to the right of the visitor center entrance, Mass Audubon's Nature Play Area is built for self-directed play rather than a standard playground. Kids can build a log cabin, explore a little woodland trail, scale a miniature observation tower, and test themselves on a stump jump and a fallen-log balance beam.

The Rockery and Other Kid-Sized Walks

The Rockery is the payoff walk: 0.5 mile over boardwalks and bridges to a grotto of narrow passages and caves that Mass Audubon calls perfect for kids who love to climb. The Stone Bridge Trail (0.2 mile) adds beaver lodges. For a wider, easier path, Mass Audubon describes the Drumlin Trail as a wide, easy old carriage road. See hiking.

Programs for Little Kids

Mass Audubon runs Terrific Toddlers sessions for families with children 2 to 4, each with a theme (in fall 2026, on Friday mornings: life under a log, leaf detectives and busy beavers). There are also evening family programs for older kids, such as a fall bat talk for ages 5 to 17. Each listing on Mass Audubon's calendar gives the price; see programs and events.

During school vacation in spring, Mass Audubon puts together four days of hikes and hands-on activities looking for signs of returning beavers, birds and frogs.

Summer Camp

Ipswich River Nature Camp, run on the sanctuary in Topsfield, takes children ages 5 to 14 to explore local habitats in what Mass Audubon describes as an educational, non-competitive camp. Tuition is on a sliding scale based on household income. As of October 2026, Mass Audubon said 2027 registration was coming soon.

Preschool

Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary runs a nature preschool for 3- to 5-year-olds, but it's located at Mass Audubon's Endicott Wildlife Sanctuary in Wenham, not at Ipswich River itself.

Birthday Parties and Groups

Mass Audubon rents the Innermost Pavilion and the Nature Center for children's birthdays and casual gatherings. Schools can book hands-on programs on site or off site, and clubs and organizations can book group programs.

Paddling and Camping With Kids

A rental canoe holds two adults and two small children, and everyone wears a life jacket; the renter has to be 18 or older (rentals). Each Perkins Island campsite takes up to six campers, children included, for members. A parent or guardian signs the watercraft waiver for each minor.
