Dogs at Ipswich River
No dogs — and where to walk one nearby
No, dogs are not allowed at Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary. Mass Audubon's property regulations prohibit dog walking and ask visitors to leave all animals and pets at home. Service animals are welcome. The rule covers the trails, the canoe rentals, Perkins Island camping and the Innermost Cabin. If you want to walk your dog in Topsfield, two state properties next door list dogs as allowed: Bradley Palmer State Park and Willowdale State Forest.

Why the Rule
This is a wildlife sanctuary, not a park, and Mass Audubon runs it for the animals first. Beavers, otters, muskrats and marsh birds all use the wetlands beside the trails, and Mass Audubon's regulations keep other disturbances out too: no hunting, no collecting, no releasing animals and no feeding wildlife. Dogs, even on a leash, add scent and noise that wildlife avoids.
Service Animals
Service animals are welcome. Mass Audubon publishes a service animal statement on its admission and access page that explains the policy. If you're not sure whether your animal counts as a service animal under that statement, call the visitor center before you come.
Don't Leave a Dog in the Car
With no dogs on the trails, it can be tempting to leave one in the car for a quick loop. Don't. Even a short walk here, like the half-mile Rockery Trail, takes time once you stop at the grotto, and a parked car heats up fast. Leave the dog at home or pick a dog-friendly property instead.
Where to Walk a Dog Nearby
Bradley Palmer State Park
Run by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) at 40 Asbury Street, Topsfield. DCR lists it as "Dogs Allowed" and describes 721 acres of pine-needled paths and rolling meadows, open sunrise to sunset. DCR charges a daily parking fee from May 23 through October 12: $5 for Massachusetts plates, $20 for others. Mass Audubon's trail map shows the state land just across the river from the sanctuary.
Willowdale State Forest
Also DCR, with parking turnouts along Ipswich Road (DCR gives 252 Ipswich Road, Topsfield) and on Linebrook Road, and free parking. DCR lists it as "Dogs Allowed" and describes 40 miles of trails, open sunrise to sunset. Hunting is allowed in parts of the forest in season, so wear bright colors in fall. More in things to do in Topsfield.
DCR's general rules apply at both: check DCR's pages for its current leash and waste requirements before you go.
Planning a Visit Without the Dog
If you're coming to the sanctuary for the trails, the hiking guide suggests five short walks. For a day out with the dog in the area, walk the dog at Bradley Palmer or Willowdale, then come back for a canoe or the Rockery another day.
Good For / Maybe Skip If
- Good for a dog-free walk: quiet trails where wildlife is less disturbed.
- Good for visitors with a service animal: welcome under Mass Audubon's policy.
- Maybe skip the sanctuary if your dog has to come; go to Bradley Palmer State Park or Willowdale State Forest.
